Things Couldn't Be Better

BY Simon OuthitPublished Apr 18, 2007

Contrary to the title, and considering that the album’s melodic climax occurs during the opening acoustic track, things certainly could be better. Of course, that’s not to say that a lack of effort is present — the songs are well structured and produced by Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, the Cancer Bats). So why are former Reason fans let down with the new release? Things Couldn’t Be Better has a very noticeable change in style from their previous hard-hitting, intense CD, Ravenna. While the new sound has the potential to be very appealing to a more mainstream audience, the band seem to have forgetten most of their screamo/punk roots and listeners looking for something more aggressive might be best to just pass. However, fans should certainly give the record a chance before slapping the "sell out” tag on the band. Highlight tracks include "My Broken Legs,” "If My Tongue Could Talk” and "We’re So Beyond This,” which is a duet between singer Adam White and Sarah Quinn (of Canadian folk duo Tegan and Sarah).
