Real Tuesday Weld I, Lucifer

Recorded as a soundtrack to Glen Duncan’s novel of the same name, I, Lucifer is an album knee-deep in ’20s and ’30s-era dance music that circles like a vulture around the themes of romance and death. Composed by the eccentric Stephen Coates, the Real Tuesday Weld’s second full-length album is haunting, moody and full of mysterious elegance (kind of like Agent Cooper’s theme from Twin Peaks). Though there is an underlying matter of seductive pop music, the Real Tuesday Weld uses poetry, Parisian bachelor pad ambience and a large cast of characters to mask the simple pop undertones. The result is a lush recording of beautifully shaped dreams that would likely go down better if you’ve read the book first (which wasn’t the case here). (Six Degrees)
