Right now, its safe to say the road is being less than kind to the Stooges. On Monday (August 4), the reunited rock icons awoke in Montreal to discover that their tour truck, packed with instruments and stage equipment, had been stolen, leaving Iggy & co. desperately searching for their gear and the punks who swiped it.
The equipment is estimated to be worth tens of thousands of dollars, the bands tour manager Eric Fischer told the Detroit Free Press, saying that the truck held everything from Scott Ashetons drum kit to Ron Ashetons guitars and amps. Mike Watts vintage Gibson bass, which the part-time Stooge has played since his Minutemen days in the early 80s, was also stolen.
"That bass would go in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame someday if we could find it, said Fischer. "Were all just gutted.
The band discovered the yellow, 15-foot Penske truck was missing at about 7:30 a.m. Monday. It had been parked on the street in front of Montreals Embassy Suites hotel (208 Saint Antoine Ouest), where the Stooges were staying after playing their first Canadian show in more than three decades at the citys Osheaga Festival on Sunday.
The Stooges will still play their scheduled gig in Toronto this Wednesday, Fischer said, but now the band will be forced to use rented and donated gear.
"I dont know if its a syndicate thats targeting bands on the road, or what, said Fischer. "But nobody ever seems to see this gear again.
