Raster-Noton's Frank Bretschneider Gears Up for Rare North American Tour, Plays Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal

Frank Bretschneider, one of the founding members of influential German record label/collective Raster-Noton, is getting set for a rare North American trek this month, including Canadian performances in Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto.

One of the highlights of the tour will be the North American premiere of Bretschneider's Kippschwingungen, which he will perform at Toronto's Music Gallery (co-presented by the Goethe-Institut, the Music Gallery and Yatra Arts) on November 29. Marking Bretschneider's latest work, Kippschwingungen is an audio-visual piece written for a Subharchord – a unique electronic "special effects" instrument developed during the 1960s at the RFZ (Germany's answer to the Radiophonic Workshop based at the East German postal service).

For the Music Gallery show, Bretschneider will recreate these experiments accompanied by his own improvised visual accompaniment. The supporting act will be Michael Trommer & Nokami with their world premiere of HTO, an audio-visual exploration of Toronto's buried rivers.

Along with that Toronto stop, Bretschneider will play Ottawa's Nature Nocturne event on November 22, as well as the inaugural MUTEK_IMG, MUTEK's A/V festival in Montreal, on November 23. This Montreal show will also feature Michael Trommer & Nokami, who will offer up their Greyfield/Wavefield. After the Canuck shows, Bretschneider will then head to the U.S. for stops in Boston, New York City and Pawtucket, RI.

Along with the performances, Bretschneider will offer two free talks in Toronto preceding his Music Gallery performance, the first at OCAD on November 28 on how to connect hardware and software via MIDI and the relationship between sound and image, and the second at the Goethe-Institut in the afternoon of November 29.
