Last year, American songwriting legend Randy Newman gave us his new song "Putin," promising at the time that a new album was heading our way fast. Now said record — Newman's first proper studio album since 2008's Harps and Angels — has been properly announced.
The album is titled Dark Matter, and it will see release on CD/digitally August 4 via Nonesuch. The vinyl edition will follow on August 18.
Dark Matter was recorded in L.A. and produced by longtime Newman collaborators Mitchell Froom, Lenny Waronker and David Boucher.
In a statement, Newman had this to say about the new album:
If there is anything consistent about the songs, there is often more than one voice, in the big ones, and it's different for me, a difficult thing to bring off, to make it comprehensible. I think it works. They cover more ground than most songs do and portray a number of different characters. Audiences are smart. They'll understand the songs. I hope they like them as well.
I'm proud of the record. I think it's entertaining — I hope it's entertaining — and that's eighty percent of what I try to do. Also, I'm doing something different than I've ever done before. It's a step forward for me. And considering how long I've been doing this, I'm kinda proud of that.
Down below, you can see the new record's trackilst, where you can also revisit its "Putin."
Newman has a few U.S. dates coming up, with a fuller fall tour promised to be announced soon.
