A woman is suing R. Kelly for sexual assault, fraud and false imprisonment.
In a lawsuit filed Monday (May 21) in New York Supreme Court, Faith Rodgers — a former partner of the R&B star — claims she was in a relationship with Kelly for less than a year. In her complaint, she claims Kelly "routinely engaged in intimidation, mental, verbal and sexual abuse, during and after sexual contact."
Rodgers allegedly met Kelly following a concert in San Antonio last year, when she was 19 years old. Kelly had her flown out to New York, where they met up and Rodgers claims she told him she was "not ready to have sex."
She alleges that he nevertheless engaged in "non-permissive, painful and abusive sex" — only learning afterwards that Kelly had herpes and she had contracted the STI, thus accusing Kelly of "deliberately and maliciously" infecting her.
Rodgers' complaint outlines other disturbing behaviour, claiming that Kelly would lock her in rooms, studios and vehicles as punishment for "failing to please defendant sexually." She also alleges that he video-recorded her "submitting to deviant and compromising sexual contact" without her consent.
The lawsuit adds that Kelly would frequently provide alcoholic drinks to Rodgers, despite the fact that she was underage and her complaints that alcohol could aggravate her epilepsy.
Rodgers also told the BBC that during their relationship, Kelly requested that she sign a contract to offer him "protection." She refused to sign it.
She went on to describe meeting a group of women that Kelly referred to as his "family," all of whom called the singer "Daddy" and followed a strict set of rules under his control. It bears striking resemblance to the stories of a number of women who were reported as being held captive in a cult-like scenario last year.

Since then, Time's Up launched a campaign to #MuteRKelly; his music was subsequently removed from algorithmically generated playlists. Contrary to the movement's intention, though, Kelly's streaming figures have actually increased since his music was restricted.
