NYC brutal death metallers Pyrexia return with their fifth album, Unholy Requiem. The release follows 2013's Feast of Iniquity and finds guitarist (and sole original member) Chris Basile recruiting new mates: drummer Alex Cohen, vocalist Jim Beach and guitarist Danny Trapani. Along with bassist Shaun Kennedy, who joined in 2012, the new lineup have revived the band — Unholy Requiem is a return to their classic '90s roots.
The album is comprised of eight tracks of relentless, pulverizing death metal, featuring equal parts speedy ferocious riffage and crushing groove-filled slams. "Angels of Gomorrah" kicks off the brutality straight out of the gate, with a whirlwind of aggressive, blazing riffs and machine-gun blast beats. "Blood to Ash" brings a darker vibe with mid-paced headbanging rhythms and Beach's super intense, deep gutturals.
Tracks like "Moment of Violence" and "The Fall of Eden" feature absolutely devastating grooves, while "Path of Disdain" and "Wrath" are filled with whiplash-fast, inhuman blasts. Unholy Requiem is a solid release throughout, and a pummelling slab of definitive New York-style death metal that harkens back to Pyrexia's pivotal 1993 debut, Sermon of Mockery.
