Published Jul 06, 2010If you're a fan of Canadian independent music, chances are that you have been closely following this year's Polaris Music Prize, which is the fifth instalment of the annual award. Last month, we brought you the long list of 40 nominees. Now, the judges have made their picks and whittled that list down to a top ten.
The short list contenders for the 2010 Polaris Music Prize are, in alphabetical order:
The Besnard Lakes - The Besnard Lakes Are the Roaring Night
Broken Social Scene - Forgiveness Rock Record
Caribou - Swim
Karkwa - Les Chemins De Verre
Dan Mangan - Nice, Nice, Very Nice
Owen Pallett - Heartland
Radio Radio - Belmundo Regal
The Sadies - Darker Circles
Shad - TSOL
Tegan and Sara - Sainthood
The list includes two previous winners (Caribou, 2008, and Owen Pallett, 2006), as well as three more former short list contenders (the Besnard Lakes, Broken Social Scene, Shad).
Perhaps the biggest surprise of the nominees is Radio Radio, a Franco-Acadien hip-hop troupe who rap in both French and English. Francophone indie rockers Karkwa may also be new to many English-speaking listeners.
The $20,000 winner will be announced in just over two months, on September 20, at the annual Polaris Music Prize gala at Toronto's Drake Hotel.
