Polaris Music Prize Announces Long List

BY Cam LindsayPublished Jun 12, 2008

The 2008 Polaris Music Prize long list was announced today, revealing the top 40 albums nominated by the jury, which is made up of journalists across Canada.

"Our objective with the Polaris Long List is to expose even more of the essential music that’s being made across the country and hopefully increase anticipation for what is sure to be a thrilling 2008 Short List,” said Prize Founder and Executive Director, Steve Jordan in a statement.

The unveiling of the long list is the first time in Polaris' three years that the top 40 vote getters has been released to the public. A $20,000 Prize will be awarded to the best full-length Canadian album released from June 1, 2007 to May 31, 2008, judged solely on artistic merit, without regard to genre or record sales. The list was selected by the 185 members of the Polaris Music Prize jury, which consists of music journalists, broadcasters and bloggers from across Canada. No music industry personnel with direct financial relationships with artists vote for Polaris.

The Polaris Jury will vote on the Long List titles to determine the 10 album Polaris Music Prize Short List. The Short List will be revealed July 7 at the Drake Hotel in Toronto.
