Poem Rocket

Psychogeography

BY Eric HillPublished Feb 1, 2001

Smart rock folks, these. All hooks and brains, Poem Rocket brings us their third full-length. Ignoring current currents and sticking to their primal blend of "sonic" youth and "swerve" driving force, their wall to wall carpet of sound is a weave of fine and colourful threads from the UK school of shimmer and groove, coarser hemp twine from West Coast warm direct emotion, and bound tightly with piano wire and NYC subway power cables snatched from some Bowery platform. Too delicate and exacting to be lumped in with most NYC "noise" rock, the trio still shoots for the heart of the song with its basic arsenal of guitar/drums/bass with a minimal accompaniment of Rhodes piano and tape loops. They are both direct yet elusive, making repeated listening a must.
