P.O.D.

Payable on Death

BY Amber AuthierPublished Dec 1, 2003

P.O.D. is at the top of their game. In 2001, the San Diego-based quartet launched their most successful record to date, Satellite. The disc, filled with youth-friendly rock anthems, went on to release several singles that attacked the radio airwaves and was certified triple platinum. The band toured globally and was asked to produce the lead track for the middle instalment of the Matrix film trilogy, Reloaded. So when guitarist Marcos picked up and left for a solo effort, many fans gasped in horror. But P.O.D. recovered from the shock of the departure quickly and recruited former Living Sacrifice guitarist Jason Truby to replace him. The new blood in the band is very evident in the sounds that make up Payable on Death. There is a beautiful edge to the disc. Sharp but brilliant guitar riffs give the band a whole new life. Tracks like "Asthma” and lead single "Will You” combine the tried and true appeal of the group (namely the harmonised vocals and straight-ahead rhythm section) with this new dynamic that Truby brings. The result is the most thoughtful and natural record to come from the P.O.D. camp. I have always liked this band but this new growth makes me like them even more. Best part for gaming fans? Payable on Death has a bonus disc with Amplitude for PlayStation 2.
