Published May 16, 2007It feels like a long time coming, but Paul Epworth has finally decided to step away from the remixes and go out on his own as an artist under the alias of Phones. Being such an in-demand producer, as well, for the likes of Bloc Party, the Rakes, the Futureheads and the Rapture is enough to set anyone back, but this new ten-inch single on Kitsuné proves that his transition from producer to artist was worth the wait. Epworths impressive remix CV (Bloc Party, New Order, Annie, Goldfrapp, Diddy) has already done well to get his name out there in indie club circles, but this solo debut breaks new ground. He's made the switch to restless techno with a bashing Alter Ego-like rush that will send hipsters flying on any indie club floor. Everything hes done prior to this has been much more disco-primed, so its refreshing to hear another side to a talented producer some felt had only one trick up his sleeve.
