Punisher — the highly anticipated sophomore solo album by Phoebe Bridgers — has arrived a little bit early, and with it, the artist has put out a call for change in the form of anti-racist activism and abolishing the police.
"I'm not pushing the record until things go back to 'normal' because I don't think they should," Bridgers wrote on Twitter earlier today. "Here it is a little early. Abolish the police. Hope you like it."
The artist's link tree, which contains her record's full streaming link, also contains links to donate to several organizations, including Movement for Black Lives, LACAN, Stop LAPD Spying Coalition, Essie Justice Group, Downtown Women's Center, Youth Justice Coalition and The Trevor Project, where fans are being encouraged to donate their funds toward the cause before streaming the record.
While media coverage of the Black Live Matter movement has slowed, demonstrations and occupations continue across Canada, the U.S. and beyond. Political unrest follows the death of George Floyd and days of sustained protests and demonstrations in Minneapolis, Los Angeles and Seattle, as well as multiple other cities across the world.
Floyd passed away on May 25 following an incident with Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin that saw the officer kneeling on Floyd's neck to restrain him, eventually suffocating Floyd to death. Chauvin has since been fired and placed under arrest for third-degree murder and manslaughter.
Since Bridgers's debut album, she has recorded and performed in boygenius with Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, as well as Better Oblivion Community Center with Conor Oberst. She also released an original song with the National's Matt Berninger and produced Christian Lee Hutson's debut album Beginners.
