Montreal's PHI Centre has been bringing immersive audio to the city for over a year via its Habitat Sonore immersive listening room — and has recently updated its programming.

Located in Old Montreal, Habitat Sonore has been presenting various immersive audio experiences in Dolby Atmos and other spatial audio formats since it launched in November 2022.

Artists previously featured in the listening room include Tanya Tagaq, Jean-Michel Blais and Patrick Watson. This winter, the room will play Jonathan Kawchuk's Everywhen and Karkwa's Dans la seconde. All Is Well's A Break in Time, the ambient project created by Fred Everything, will also be added in the coming weeks.

Playing albums is just one feature of the 16-speaker, acoustically treated, sound-proofed room. The space also exhibits sonic art pieces and narrative works, and will soon host live events. Programs typically run for around an hour, with a maximum capacity of 10 listeners per session at a cost of $10 per person.

Although each experience is different, Habitat Sonore intends to "completely envelope the listener in another reality, sensory or narrative. In sound, it is a sonic representation of a virtual space," according to Phoebe Greenberg, PHI's founder and chief creative officer.

Aesthetically, the room is intimate and minimal in design, equipped with bean bag cushions provided for lounging, and tasteful lighting that dims when the program begins.

Habitat Sonore is located at 407 Saint-Pierre Street. For a quick glimpse into the immersive listening room, check out their post below.
