Published Feb 18, 2011Petra Haden and Yuka Honda started working on their If By Yes project all the way back in 2002, but you can hardly blame the two for taking so long to prep their debut album Salt on Sea Glass. While the seeds of friendship were sewn back in the '90s when they met touring with That Dog and Cibo Matto, respectively, the two have been extremely busy over the last decade.
Haden has had her hands full with experimental works like Petra Haden Sings the Who Sells Out, composing scores for Toyota Prius commercials and performing with the likes of the Decemberists, Foo Fighters, Beck and more. Post-Cibo Matto, Honda released a few out-there electronic albums for jazz freak John Zorn's Tzadik label, while also producing records for Pizzicato Five and Miu Sakamoto.
While it's been a long process, the pair are finally ready to let loose their first album. Recorded in spurts between 2002 and now, a press release touts that Salt on Sea Glass is an avant-garde pop album that is "guaranteed to seduce you with [its] utterly exquisite and playful sensibilities, futuristic rhythms, and other-worldly sounds."
A stream of the track "In My Dreams" is up now on label site Chimeras Music. You can check it out here.
Haden and Honda are joined in If By Yes by a couple Cornelius members (guitarist Hirotaka "Shimmy" Shimizu and drummer Yuko Arak), while the disc also features some high-profile guest musicians. Legendary Talking Head David Byrne stops by to sing on "Eliza," while Wilco member Nels Cline and Honda's former Cibo Matto bandmate Sean Lennon are also said to appear. You can check out the tracklisting below.
