While monuments of colonists and slave owners have started to be removed all over the world, one fan has launched a petition to replace Tennessee's Confederate statues with one of the state's most admired country singer-songwriters, Dolly Parton.
A fan named Alex Parsons has set up a Change.org petition in order to gather signatures in support of replacing all of Tennessee's confederate statues with the artist who "has given more to this country and this state than those confederate officers could ever have hoped to take away."
Since its launch, the petition has reached over 2,700 signatures of its 5,000-signature goal.
"Tennessee is littered with statues memorializing confederate officers," Parsons wrote of the movement. "History should not be forgotten, but we need not glamorize those who do not deserve our praise. Instead, let us honor a true Tennessee hero, Dolly Parton."
He added: "Let's replace the statues of men who sought to tear this country apart with a monument to the woman who has worked her entire life to bring us closer together."
The petition follows a call from Taylor Swift to remove Nashville's statue of slave trader and KKK grand wizard, Nathan Bedford Forrest. Whether or not Swift co-signs the movement to honour Parton instead remains unclear.
Late last month, Parton shared an uplifting new single titled "When Life Is Good Again," after quietly donating $1 million to a Nashville university's coronavirus research initiative.
