Bowed Metal Music

BY I. KhiderPublished Oct 1, 2001

This album is comprised of harmonic drones resonated from an instrument known as a "steel cello," or "bowed metal." This is the kind of album that can sustain deep, meditative listening, as the CD is one continuous piece with track points to assist in navigating favourite moments. The textures are smooth, ambient and atmospheric, much smoother than the phrase "bowed metal" would imply, but the noises are akin to the more tense moments in a film, since it has an eerie, brooding quality to it. After listening to the piece for a while, because of the continuity my mind began to adjust and embrace the context of the piece and distinguish the musical direction, like learning a new, intuitive language, then I no longer saw the work as brooding, but rather a different kind of beauty.
