Peter "Pete Flesh" Karlsson (ex-Deceiver, ex-Maze of Torment, ex-Thrown) is the mastermind behind Swedish death metal project the Pete Flesh Deathtrip, previously known simply as Flesh. Returning with his fourth full-length Mortui Vivos Docent, following 2008's Worship the Soul of Disgust, Mr. Flesh, along with session musicians Micke Broberg and Andreas Jonsson, has changed a few other things along with the moniker. Maintaining an old school Swedish death metal sound on tracks like opener "Fallen Bliss," with groove-based heavy riffs and intense drumming, Mortui Vivos Docent also incorporates some melodic death metal, as well as black metal. Featuring the use of keyboards, "The Eternal Dawn" contains black metal-esque atmospheric tones, as well as a variety of time signatures and guitar solos. The Pete Flesh Deathtrip switches up the style yet again with the fast-paced "Crave the Fire," which includes thrashy rhythms and pummelling drum work. With different styles blending seamlessly into the traditional Swedish sound, Mortui Vivos Docent is a well-executed release.
