Pete Doherty has pleaded guilty and been handed a fine and suspended jail sentence, after being arrested twice in Paris over the past week.

The Libertines and Babyshambles singer has been fined €5,000 (about $7,300 CAD) and given a three-month suspended jail sentence for "violence while intoxicated." He will also be on probation for two years.

"It is a lenient decision. Mr. Doherty will be able to keep singing," his lawyer told Reuters. "It is what we had asked."

Doherty was initially fined after being arrested for attempting to purchase cocaine in the early hours of Friday morning (November 8).

Upon release, he took a combination of alcohol, Valium and sleeping pills and was re-arrested after an argument with two men on the street turned violent.

Doherty has been arrested for drug offences a number of times in the past.

He currently splits his time between homes in Margate, U.K., and Paris.
