The 2009 BRIT Awards took place last night (February 18) at London's Earls Court and saw Duffy and Kings of Leon come away as the night's big winners, while Pet Shop Boys stole the show with their "outstanding contribution."
The Welsh throwback songstress took home British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act and MasterCard British Album for Rockferry. Meanwhile, Kings of Leon represented for the international set, pulling out wins for International Group and International Album for Only by the Night.
Other categories saw similarly predictable winners with Kanye West taking home International Male Solo Artist, Katy Perry as the International Female Solo Artist and Girls Aloud's "The Promise" snatching British Single. There were even some surprises, as Elbow were chosen as British Group, most likely for winning the Mercury Prize, Iron Maiden scooping British Live Act and Florence and the Machine being the Critics' Choice.
There were also a number of high energy performances by Coldplay (who were shockingly snubbed in their categories), U2, Girls Aloud, Kings of Leon, Estelle with the Ting Tings, and the Killers' Brandon Flowers and Lady GaGa joined the Pet Shop Boys, who both closed out the show with a rapturous medley of their hits and took home the award for Outstanding Contribution to Music.
