Pepper Rabbit Beauregard

Pepper Rabbit Beauregard
Few indie bands can claim that their first shows took place in India, but that's the case for wandering troubadours Xander Singh and Luc Laurent. The pair played together intermittently over the years before settling on current project Pepper Rabbit. Like their globetrotting lifestyle (Singh has lived in India and Laurent New Orleans before settling in Los Angeles), the duo borrow from a variety of indie, psych and folk sources, incorporating the sounds of Neutral Milk Hotel and Sparkelhorse into their music. The result is, at times, haunting and atmospheric ("Clarinet Song") or playful and catchy ("Harvest Moon," "Older Brother"). But while Pepper Rabbit have managed to create a very consistent debut, it's difficult to distinguish them from peers also plying this brand of echo-laden, multi-instrumental indie pop. There's no doubt that a wealth of talent lies within the band, making Beauregard a very satisfying, if sometimes redundant, listen. (Kanine)
