Pearl Jam Set September 20 Release Date for Backspacer, Name Album After Turtle

BY Brock ThiessenPublished Jul 10, 2009

At long last, long-running grunge survivors Pearl Jam have set a firm release date for their up and coming Backspacer. The record is due out September 20 and, as previously reported, will be sold exclusively through Target stores in the U.S., as well as on the band's website.

Like most records, this one is preceded by a single, "The Fixer," which will be released to radio on July 20. It also comes with a supporting tour, which will include two Canadian stops: Calgary on August 8 as part of Virgin Festival Alberta and Toronto on August 21. Apparently, more North American dates are coming, as well as some in New Zealand and Australia in November.

Oh, and if you're wondering about that title, Backspacer, the record is apparently named after a sea turtle that Pearl Jam sponsored in the Great Turtle Race back in April. Sadly, though, a turtle will not don the cover of the new record. Instead, we'll get this piece of work, which unfortunately is nearly as bad as the avocado on the cover of their last album, 2006's self-titled effort.

There is no tracklisting yet for Backspacer, but here are all the tour dates announced so far:
