While chances are Paul Simon isn't quite ready to quit promoting his latest batch of tunes, last April's So Beautiful or So What, the beloved songwriter is gearing up to shine a spotlight on his entire career via a new best-of collection called Songwriter.
The two-disc compilation, which will be released October 25 via Sony/Legacy, presents a cross section of the performer's expansive catalogue selected by Simon himself, from early ska-tinged solo single "Mother and Child Reunion," to his African highlife-referencing Graceland period in the '80s, straight up to his most recent disc. Also included on the set is a recent live performance of Simon & Garfunkel classic "The Sound of Silence," which was taken from a gig at New York's Webster Hall earlier this year.
Most interesting, perhaps, is the inclusion of Aretha Franklin's gospel soul take on "Bridge Over Trouble Water." Considering Simon recently told NME, "I think of myself as a songwriter first, the recording artist and performer in me follow in the writer's footsteps," Franklin's tribute seems fitting.
On top of the greatest-hits package, Sony will also be reissuing a number of Simon's older albums on October 25 as well. The remastered discs are 1980's One Trick Pony soundtrack, 1983's Hearts and Bones, 1986's Graceland, and 1990's The Rhythm of the Saints.
