Krief

"Life As It Happens" (lyric video)

Krief (full name Patrick Krief) is known in the Canadian music community for his work as a member of the Dears, but he's branching out solo with a double album entitled Automanic — and you can hear the first single "Life As It Happens" right now.

The first half of the album, Automanic Red, is fuelled by "anger, anguish and ego," while its latter half, Automanic Blue, finds Krief delving into existential reflection on reality and mortality; the two come together to offer a more complete culmination of Krief's honest musical take on life. "Life as It Happens" is the first instance of the new sound, and it came to the singer-songwriter quickly.

"'Life As It Happens' is one of those songs that was written in less than three minutes," Krief tells Exclaim! "It came to me faster than I could write it down. The vision was to have a steady flowing stream of sounds and textures coming in and out over the three-chord progression, all while telling a story about lost loves, without it being overly negative. Ultimately, it's a song about hope."

You can hear that nostalgic, optimistic sentiment translate into the new track in the player below.
