Michael Angelakos of Passion Pit Comes Out as Gay

BY Alex HudsonPublished Nov 10, 2015

Passion Pit leader Michael Angelakos has been fairly forthcoming about his personal life, having spoken openly about his bipolar disorder in the past. Now, he has shared some new information about himself: he's gay.

It seems that this is a relatively recent realization for the synth-pop musician. He married stylist Kirsty Mucci in 2013, and they announced their divorce in August of this year. Speaking with Bret Easton Ellis on his podcast B.E.E., Angelakos addressed his sexuality, and he credited Mucci with helping him to come to terms with his orientation. Previously, he had privately identified as bisexual.

"I just wanted so badly to be straight, because I love her so much," he said regarding his wife. "When I decided to really deal with it head on — which was, I don't know, in June — she was the one that kind of spearheaded it in a way. But then said, 'You have to take it from here.' We were going through a little bit of a hard time. She said, 'You need to figure out what's going on with your sexuality. You can't hate yourself anymore.'"

He spoke extensively about the public narrative that fans and journalists have created about his life, and he and Ellis spoke thoughtfully about their experiences regarding coming out, being in the public eye, and social constructs of homosexuality.

Listen to the podcast below. The segment in which they discuss sexuality starts around the 49-minute mark.
