Paper Lions Launch Own Record Label for 'My Friends' Album

BY Alex HudsonPublished May 13, 2013

Last year, Paper Lions gave away their 2010 collection Trophies after reportedly not receiving any of the earnings from the record, so it's not too surprising to learn that the Maritime pop rockers are releasing their new album via their own label. My Friends is due out on August 20 through the band's own Fountain Pop Records.

The album was recorded in Vancouver with Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, the New Pornographers, Mother Mother). It reportedly introduces a strain of of darkness into the band's sunny pop sound, as Beach Boys-style harmonies mingle with rock guitars.

A press release describes the album like this: "Stories of love and pain, childish fights, best friends, beaches and forts; they evoke the melancholia of youth, remembered by someone not very far from it."

This follows Paper Lions' 2012 EP At Long Creek. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to watch a short album trailer featuring a clip of new music and a battered-looking Polaroid that gradually comes into view.

Before My Friends drops, the band will hit the road in North America. Much of the May and June schedule takes place in the U.S., but there's also a small selection of Canadian stops.
