Paper Lions

'My Friends' (album stream)

BY Alex HudsonPublished Aug 13, 2013

PEI pop-rockers Paper Lions have experienced some label problems in the past, but now they've started up their own Fountain Pop Records and will drop My Friends on August 20. Ahead of the official release date, they've shared the entire thing on Exclaim.ca.

The album was recorded in Vancouver with esteemed Canuck producer Howard Redekopp (Tegan and Sara, the New Pornographers, Mother Mother). It finds the band in typically tuneful form, with vocal harmonies mingling with sprightly rhythms and traces of guitar grit.

A press release promises of the album, "Stories of love and pain, childish fights, best friends, beaches and forts; they evoke the melancholia of youth, remembered by someone not very far from it." This translates in the serene dance-pop grooves of "My Friend," the hard-charging "So Lonely" and the lushly balladic "Ghostwriters."
