Published Sep 02, 2015In 2010, right before the vinyl boom reached the peak it's at today, Panasonic announced that it was discontinuing its iconic Technics SL-1200 turntable. The world mourned its loss, but now five years later, Technics is relaunching with a new turntable.
As Wired reports [via FACT], Panasonic announced the Technics comeback at its IFA press conference in Berlin. Rather than relaunch the SL-1200, the company announced that it is rebuilding the turntables with brand new elements throughout.
"Turntables are a very iconic product for the Technics brand," Michiko Ogawa, director of Technics and executive officer at Panasonic, told Wired through a translator. "It is important to show our sincere dedication [to that]. The turntable market is very small but it is a very important brand product."
Exact specifications are unclear at this point, although the aluminum prototype above was showcased at the show. Stay tuned for more details on the new Technics turntable as they become available.
