Pain

Live Is Overrated

BY Laura Wiebe TaylorPublished Feb 1, 2006

Live may be overrated but for those of us in North America hooked on Peter Tägtgren's industrial-infused hit machine, the opportunity to see Pain onstage is a tantalising treat, and the Metalmania performance captured here falls short in little other than length. The live mix lacks the density of Pain's album sound and a keyboardist would be more compelling than the disembodied backing track, but Tägtgren's band is solid and his vocal variations, like delivering several lines death metal style, work well in concert and lend his poppier recent material a more aggressive edge. The DVD features songs from every album; in addition to the Metalmania concert it includes a six-song TV studio performance and a two-song bootleg, plus the videos released from the past three records — a definite perk. As if that wasn't enough, an interview with Tägtgren, plus loads of info on the band, completes the package. (Metal Mind, www.metalopolis.pl)
