Owen

"Forget Me" (the Promise Ring cover)

BY Gregory AdamsPublished Nov 12, 2014

Nothing feels good like transforming an old emo tune into a new countrified cover song, or at least that's the gambit Owen (aka Mike Kinsella) has taken by reinterpreting the Promise Ring's "Forget Me" for his forthcoming Other People's Songs. Before the album lands December 2 via Polyvinyl, you can check out Kinsella working the C&W angle in an audio stream.

Stripping the Nothing Feels Good closer of its mid '90s emo leanings, Owen replaces crashing drums and guitar distortion with acoustic strums, brushed beats and boot-stompin' fiddle solos.

Also gone are the cartoon cat lisps of Kinsella's old Cap'n Jazz bandmate Davey von Bohlen, supplanted with southern-styled charm for lines about how to spend afternoons "measuring time in spoons."
