Overkill

Live at Wacken Open Air 2007

New Jersey thrash institution Overkill bring their blue-collar metal to the masses — 70,000 strong — at last year’s Wacken Open Air festival. Professionally shot with multiple cameras, the band’s ten-song set (with no DVD extras) covered crowd favourites as well as selections from the then unreleased Immortalis. Even after two decades, front-man Bobby "Blitz” Ellsworth’s voice still holds up during classic screamers "Elimination” and "Wrecking Crew,” while he flaunts the band’s metal humour in the Lawnmower Deth-like "Old School.” The camera crew doesn’t focus enough on guitar solos and fret board fingering, though occasionally the frame does an odd 360-degree flip. As usual, the best part is Blitz’s between song banter with the throngs. Fans looking for detailed shredding should stick with 2002’s two-DVD set Wrecking Everything.
