Overcast Sound

Commute

Since the summer of 2010, Toronto, ON-based net label basic_sounds has been releasing high quality electronic offerings at the beginning of every month from up-and-coming artists, as well as fairly established names in the electronic community, such as Dntel. Commute, a two-track release from Victoria, BC dub-techno duo Overcast Sound (aka Jamie Drouin and Michael Pettit), is their third release on the net label. The EP consists of two dub-laden ambient tracks, "Westward" and "Eastward," which are slower and more elusive than much of their previous work, with some great, muted jazz drums. The subtlest of bass lines underpins washes of warm, ambient sound, layered with samples of intermittent crackles and fuzz, adding to the textural palate. Inspired by the duo's recent (and upcoming) travels, this isn't music for a short commuter ride, with all its hustle, bustle and frequent stops, but for a grander journey, like a cross-Canada or trans-Atlantic night flight. With both of the tracks clocking in at over 20 minutes each, it allows time for each piece to unfold organically and beautifully. Put on repeat, this would be the perfect soundtrack for a sleepless journey or a stumble home at sunrise.
