emmersonHALL — the indie alt-folk project of Ottawa-by-way-of-Lindsay singer-songwriter Cole Hallman (Sorry Snowman) — is getting nostalgic on his new single in collaboration with fanclubwallet, "Kindergarten."

The track is the first single from Hallman's forthcoming debut album, set to be released on Club Records: the new label co-founded by fanclubwallet's Hannah Judge and Michael Watson (chemical club, Preloved). For six months, Hallman and Watson spent every Thursday — Hallman's only day off work — putting together the record, with the singer-songwriter drawing lyrical inspiration from the likes of Wilco and the Weakerthans.

Produced by Watson, "Kindergarten" is a creaking, bass-driven acoustic meditation on that first day of school feeling. Coming in at under the two-and-a-half-minute mark, it feels like the return of a repressed memory; an innocent-sounding playground rhyme that, upon retrospective reflection, has surprisingly dark undertones. Further padded out by slide guitar and children's instruments, Judge and Hallman trade vocals, tapping into the frustration of not being tall enough to ride — and the tenacity it takes to hold back your tears.
