Opium Jukebox will perhaps be the first album of "muzak" to be rejected by banks and department store chains simply due to its repulsive nature. Despite the choice of some interesting material, Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit," NIN's "Head Like a Hole," Love & Rockets' "Ball of Confusion" and Devo's "Whip It," these electronically blasphemous, childish, drug-influenced renditions portray nothing less than someone with too much time on their hands, whose suburban existence is defined by being bored and stoned with nothing more. If anything, this album is proof that living comfortably with the ability to be able to afford to release and distribute music, along with a lazy reliance on computers to do the creative tasks, are reasons enough why we jaded rock critics always end up heralding the kid from the alley who has nothing but imagination and a ratty old acoustic guitar.
