Singer-songwriter James Taylor once said, "A concert is always like a feast day to me." So why not follow in Sweet Baby James' footsteps by satisfying your hunger with one of Exclaim!'s can't miss concerts? Check out our picks for some of this week's best shows from July 25-31 below.
Calgary Folk Festival
Even a flood won't stop organizers of the Calgary Folk Festival from hosting one of their biggest performances to date. In honour of its 38th year, the annual four-day long event has roped in the likes of Alabama Shakes, Bahamas, Kurt Vile, and more. But if modern music isn't really your thing, you can always check out Sunday night's performance from semi-reunited rockers Creedence Clearwater Revival. Just don't expect John Fogerty to show up.
7/25-28 Calgary, AB - Prince's Island
Run the Jewels
Hip-hop tag team Killer Mike and El-P (aka Run the Jewels) have been tearing up North America on their current tour, including a standout performance at Toronto's The Hoxton earlier this month. Now, the West Coast has a chance to see what the hype is all about, with the rap duo playing a final set of Canadian dates this week in Calgary and Vancouver.
7/25 Calgary, AB - Republik
7/26 Vancouver, BC - The Biltmore Cabaret
Helado Negro
Electro-soul impresario Helado Negro (aka Florida-based recording artist Roberto Carlos Lange) crosses Canada in support of his newest LP, Invisible Life. Being that this is his first album to incorporate English into his predominantly Spanish-based songwriting, it's now easier than ever to sing along to Lange's eclectic indie-tronica tunes.
7/25 Montreal, QC - MEG Montreal
7/26 Montreal, QC - Casa del Popolo
7/27 Mansonville, QC - 40, Chemin du Mont Owl's Head
Corb Lund
Prolific Canadian country singer Corb Lund's Cabin Fever may have missed making the Polaris Short List this year, but you can make it up to the veteran rocker by catching him perform a pair of dates this week, including a flood relief benefit show at Edmonton's The Starlite Room.
7/27 Bengough, SK - Bengough Regional Park
7/28 Edmonton, AB - The Starlite Room
Mad Decent Block Party
Not so much a block party as an electronic music festival, the Mad Decent crew will be taking over Toronto's historic Fort York for a day-long dance party with performances from the likes of Zeds Dead, Major Lazer and A Tribe Called Red. The best part of all: fewer acts on the bill means longer sets from your favourite artists.
7/26 Toronto, ON - Fort York: Garrison Common
Olenka & the Autumn Lovers
Hard-working folk crew Olenka & the Autumn Lovers have been keeping pretty quiet since the release of their Hard Times EP last fall, but the acoustic outfit is finally breaking their silence with a small summer tour that finds the band playing off the beaten path around la belle province.
7/25 Quebec City, QC - Le Cercle
7/26 Rimouski, QC - Bar Le Villageois
7/31 St. Andrews, QC - Red Herring
Riff Raff
The last we heard from over-the-top rapper Riff Raff was that he was threatening to sue the makers of Spring Breakers to the tune of $8 to $10 million for allegedly stealing his image. But until his cash cow finally comes in, watch the intergalactic MC make a few bucks at Ottawa's Ritual and as part of Toronto's Mad Decent Block Party.
7/25 Ottawa, ON - Ritual
7/26 Toronto, ON - Fort York: Garrison Common
Tegan and Sara
Singer-songwriting pair Tegan and Sara have been touring on and off with Fun. for the better part of the summer, but it appears the Canadian twins have decided to trim the fat for their long-awaited return to the East Coast. Watch the indie-pop outfit get their arena rock on as they pass through the Maritimes for a set of headline performances in support of this year's dance-minded LP Heartthrob.
7/29 St. John's, NL - Mile One Centre
7/30 Halifax, NS - Halifax Metro Centre
7/31 Moncton, NB - Casino New Brunswick
