Old Man Luedecke Unveils 'Domestic Eccentric' LP

BY Gregory AdamsPublished May 27, 2015

Old Man Luedecke is apparently a bit of a homebody and has opted to focus his next album on his family life. The folk figure's upcoming sixth full-length record is the tellingly titled Domestic Eccentric, and it lands July 24 through True North Records.

The album follows last year's I Never Sang Before I Met You collaborative EP with Joel Plaskett, and a press release notes that this latest collection is another tag-team effort. This time around, Luedecke invited American bluegrass musician Tim O'Brien up to his cabin home in Chester, NS, for a week to make the LP. Luedecke said in a statement that working with O'Brien "was a waking dream."

As could be expected, Domestic Eccentric is centred on home life, with album themes said to touch on "what it's like to still be in love with the woman you started writing songs about and moved to the country with more than a decade ago, about what it's like to watch your own babies grow to children, and about the joys and sorrows attendant upon the milestones of parenthood."

First single "The Early Days" is a road-tested track that had transformed significantly before being recorded for Domestic Eccentric as a paean to being a parent.

"It started out as a song about gambling and became a song about something I know way more about, being a dad," Luedecke said. "I worked hard to get all the bittersweetness of the craziness and speed of these early days of being parents (and alive in general) in there."

You'll find the gently strummed folk song, whose lyrics about kids snacking on Goldfish Crackers at a Superstore may well nab the guy an endorsement deal with Pepperidge Farms, down below.

In addition to main collaborator O'Brien, Domestic Eccentric also features contributions from vocalist Jennah Barry, drummer Nick Halley and Samson Grisman, who recorded his bass parts in Nashville. John D. Southern Adams served as the producer for the project.
