OFF!

Yonge-Dundas Square, Toronto On June 16

Hardcore supergroup OFF! rode into town on a wave of positive press, and it's easy to see why. Featuring Keith Morris, original lead singer of Black Flag and founding member of Circle Jerks, along with members of Burning Brides, Red Kross and Rocket from the Crypt, the band have rekindled the kind of ferocious hardcore not heard since the genre's early '80s heyday. Morris was in fine form, even if his grizzled looks and thinning, dreadlocked hair belied his mid-50s age, declaring at one point, "I'm an asshole and a prick, but not a child molester." Some ill-informed onstage rants about politics aside, the band ripped through their short discography (a series of seven-inches featuring songs that rarely reach the minute-and-a-half mark). The live representations of their songs are almost identical to the studio versions, exposing just how raw their creation was.
