Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

"Ballad of the Mighty I" (ft. Johnny Marr) (video)

Two generations of Manchester rock have come together, as former Oasis bloke Noel Gallagher and onetimes Smiths axeman Johnny Marr have teamed up for the single "Ballad of the Mighty I."

Despite the title, this cut by Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds isn't a ballad by most people's standards. Rather, it's a peppy number that shifts from swaggering verses to soaring rock refrains, and the accompanying clip shows Gallagher walking around town, giving his jacket away in a simple act of kindness and then acquiring a new one through petty theft.

Marr does't appear in the video, which takes a turn for the meta when Gallagher stumbles upon a video editing room and then leads his band in a live performances. There's a subtle but funny moment at the end when the director accidentally calls him "Liam."

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will release Chasing Yesterday on March 2 through Sour Mash Records.
