Published Mar 22, 2014The album art of the self-titled debut from Minnesota power-metallers Noble Beast features a Tyrannosaurus Rex with lava pouring from its jaws, with lightning and volcanoes in the background, just to make sure you're absolutely aware of what you're getting into when you give this record a spin. Every choice the band has made has been in the spirit of fun, from the deliberately over-the-top solo passages to the sweeping, cinematic scope of the melodies.
The lyrics often come across as more of a list of Things That Are Awesome than a cohesive narrative, and the songs are built around hooks and singalong choruses. The vocals sound a little bit swallowed, and sometimes the productions leans toward the small and tinny, which can bely the epic feel the band are going for.
Still, there is a great deal of potential displayed in Noble Beast, and listening to the record will instantly make any power metal fan feel like a dragon slayer. (Tridroid Records)
