Though their credibility over the years has dwindled considerably, its still entertaining to see the navel-gazing NME assemble their always enjoyable lists (in this case done so with the help of trendy UK radio station XFM). The May 5th issue boasts "the Greatest Indie Anthems Ever, which was voted for by bands, critics and readers on their website NME.com and as always with these things includes the classic hits along with the recent ones that will no doubt be forgotten the next time such a list is remade (yeah, Im looking at you Kaiser Chiefs).
The term "indie has always been a shady one that constantly defies any real definition these days, but in this case the list was made based on the artists and their record deals being "independent in the UK. So yes, it is filled with big names like Oasis (Creation), the Smiths (Rough Trade), the Stone Roses (Silvertone) and Nirvana (Geffen) wait, wasnt Nirvana on a major? Okay, basically there are no rules to work with here, so just enjoy the ridiculousness and let it inspire you to make a better list on your own.
