Numero Group side-label JR is set to explore former Swell Maps leader Nikki Sudden's solo career, as well as that of his Jacobites project, in an upcoming vinyl reissue series.
According to a press release, the first batch of re-releases drops on wax November 12. This includes Sudden's 1982 debut Waiting on Egypt and 1983's The Bible Belt, as well as the Jacobites' 1984 self-titled debut and 1985's Robespierre's Velvet Basement. This marks the first time any of the records have appeared on vinyl since their initial release, and they'll all come with "replica album cover artwork" and feature the original tracklistings.
Waiting on Egypt arrived after the demise of Swell Maps and features songs Sudden had initially prepped for the outfit. That said, it "cut back on the skronk and clatter" of Swell Maps to instead offer a more rock'n'roll-styled approach influenced by Marc Bolan and T. Rex. It also included a cover of the Rolling Stones' "I'd Much Rather Be with the Boys."
The Bible Belt introduced writer/guitarist Dave Kusworth into the mix, which helped steer the pair into their Jacobites project. The duo's self-titled debut arrived in 1984, and further worked a "vital, shambolic" approach to the groundwork laid by the Stones and Bob Dylan.
Lastly, Jacobites' Robespierre's Velvet Basement was an "unabashed devotion to Faces, Stones, and the folky young Bolan." Originally planned to be a double LP, it was eventually pared down to a single record before its release.
The next wave of reissues is expected to land in February and will cover 1986's Texas, 1987's Dead Men Tell No Tales, both credited to Nikki Sudden and the Jacobites, as well as Sudden's Kiss You Kidnapped Charabanc collaborative LP with the Birthday Party's Rowland S. Howard.
