Nicki Minaj has rappers like Kanye West saying she could be the second best rapper of all time and enough hype surrounding her mixtapes to build maximum anticipation for her debut full-length. But the one thing she doesn't have yet is a certified radio hit. That might change with freshly leaked single "Check It Out."
The commercial appeal of this song comes from Will.I.Am, the Black Eyed Peas hit-maker who's like the McDonald's of rap. The track has everything to win the kids' love: a "Video Killed the Radio Star" sample, an Auto-Tuned hook and just enough rapping to satiate their short attention spans.
What it doesn't have is any of the grit or charm of Minaj's best mixtape material. While we definitely think she could make for a great superstar, we'll be lamenting her fame if this is the kind of material we have to listen to.
