Peterborough, ON-based musician Nick Ferrio releases his latest album Soothsayer next week, but Exclaim! is giving you an early listen to the record right now.
The 10-song offering hears him cranking up his typical folky sound into the realm of full-blown rock'n'roll. Across the set of songs, Ferrio draws on sounds from the '70s, incorporating elements of power pop and psych rock — but never loses his signature knack for heart-on-his-sleeve storytelling.
He also cites bands like Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and the Sadies as inspiring examples of guitar music, pushing him towards creating something a little louder and less polished than he's used to.
"I think the difference between a good songwriter and a great one is the ability to blur the lines between genres — shift into different territories — all the while still maintaining a voice and a narrative," Ferrio tells Exclaim! "I feel like with Soothsayer I'm demonstrating my ability to do that."
