Published Mar 19, 2013Travelling package tour Next Music from TOKYO has been bringing some of Japan's finest acts over to Canada for a few years now, and the revelatory event has just announced its next instalment heads back our way in May.
This is the fifth tour all together, and it will bring an eclectic range of bands to Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.
First up is Mouse on the Keys, a trio made up of two pianists and a drummer. According to festival organizers, their sound fuses jazz-minded passages with touches of classical and hardcore, with influences ranging from Debussey and Stravinsky to Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Glasper and Steve Reich.
Chi-na (チーナ) are also said to mix jazz with touches of post-rock, while Kinoko Teikoku (きのこ帝国) apparently flaunt a shoegazing sound inspired by Ride and My Bloody Valentine. Harafromhell, meanwhile, are a female-fronted pop-punk band. The press release notes that the band's winning formula is "the catchiness of their music coupled with their turbocharged live performance."
