Next Music from Tokyo Returns to Canada for 13th Edition

BY Calum SlingerlandPublished Sep 12, 2018

Having brought the best of the best of Japan's indie and underground music scene to Canada for nearly a decade, Next Music from Tokyo has announced the details behind its 13th edition, set to take place in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver this year.

For the first time in the tour's history, its 2018 edition will feature a band from outside Japan with Taiwan math rock outfit Elephant Gym. The group will begin a world tour with the NMFT dates, promising energetic performances loaded with "intricate, yet clean" instrumentation.

The 2018 tour will also feature the return of Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, fresh off releasing their first new album in eight years with No New World. The bill also includes NMFT 2015 alumni otori, Osaka math rockers paranoid void and three-piece garage rockers UlulU.

Since 2010, Next Music from Tokyo has been curated by Toronto-based anesthesiologist Steven Tanaka, who travels to Japan five to seven times a year to scout the annual lineup.

Four tour dates will make up the tour itinerary, with the bands spending two nights in Toronto before performances in Montreal and Vancouver. Scroll through the schedule to get a taste of this year's lineup in the players below.
