New Rarities Collections from the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Boy Dylan Arrive Thanks to Change in Copyright Laws

BY Alex HudsonPublished Dec 12, 2013

As we've previously reported, the European Union recently extended copyright protection on sound recordings, but there's a catch: this law only applies to recording published within 50 years of being made. As the New York Times notes, this means that record labels are issuing rare early recordings from some seminal artists in order to retain their copyright.

There are three artists in particular who are being treated to low-key compilations of rarities: the Beatles, the Beach Boys and Bob Dylan.

The labels aren't giving these releases any sort of promotional push, since they appear to be for purely legal reasons. Reports indicate that Universal will issue The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 on iTunes this coming Tuesday (December 17). It will feature a whopping 59 tracks, including studio outtakes and BBC performances, and even some rough demos.

Also next Tuesday, Capitol will digitally release the Beach Boys-related collection The Big Beat 1963. This is a slightly scattershot assortment of odds and ends that includes instrumental cuts, various Brian Wilson demos, and songs from the all-female Beach Boys spinoff the Honeys.

Lastly, Sony/Legacy recently released Bob Dylan's The 50th Anniversary Collection 1963. This six-LP vinyl box set includes unreleased studio material and live recordings, and it appears to have been pressed in very limited quantities; if Wikipedia is to be believed, then only 100 were sold. It has showed up on Amazon, but is listed as out of stock.

This Dylan release follows last year's very similar The Copyright Extension Collection Vol. I, which consisted of material from 1962.

The very extensive tracklists are below.
