Published Jun 28, 2011Long-running music conference New Music West has existed as a Vancouver institution for two decades. In fact, it was in protest of that very festival that the Vancouver underground marathon Music Waste first launched in 1994. Now, however, it looks as if Music Waste will have the city to themselves, as New Music West has moved to Edmonton for its 2011 edition.
The three-day event runs from July 21 to July 23 in various venues across the city. The confirmed lineup so far includes SNFU, Dojo Workhorse, Dan Bern, Enjoy Your Pumas, Econoline Crush, Cygnets, Samantha Savage Smith, Touch and Nato, Dragon Fli Empire, Mass Choir, Summer Games, Striker, Matadors, Preying Saints, the Shakedowns, Fall City Fall, Soulictiors and Souljah Fyah, with many more acts promised.
According to the New Music West website, bands will have plenty of opportunities to win various awards and cheques for $20,000 as a reward for the best performance, best songwriting and best recording.
