Neneh Cherry Teams Up with the Thing to Cover the Stooges, Suicide, Madvillain on New Album

It's been well over two decades since her career-defining hit "Buffalo Stance" came out, but Swedish singer/rapper Neneh Cherry seems to be doing well for herself as of late. In addition to forming the trip-hop band CirKus, her postmillennial projects have included collaborations with Peter Gabriel, Gorillaz, Teddybears and Groove Armada.

Now she has now teamed up with Scandinavian jazz trio the Thing to record an album that's fittingly called The Cherry Thing, which is due out on June 19 through Smalltown Supersound.

Making this collaboration a whole lot more peculiar is the fact that The Cherry Thing consists almost entirely of covers. The ensemble will be performing songs by Madvillain, the Stooges, Suicide, Martina Topley-Bird, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry and more. Before you get too excited, the Don Cherry in question is the jazz musician (Neneh's father), not the gimmick-rapping hockey hero.

See the tracklist below. Scroll past that to watch a lo-quality performance clip of Cherry and the Thing performing live. The whole thing is very freaky, but the song actually appears to be Madvillain's "Accordion" (which appears on the album).

The Cherry Thing:

1. Cashback (Neneh Cherry)

2. Dream Baby Dream (Suicide)

3. Too Tough to Die (Martina Topley-Bird)

4. Sudden Movement (Mats Gustafsson)

5. Accordion (Madvillain)

6. Golden Heart (Don Cherry)

7. Dirt (The Stooges)

8. What Reason (Ornette Coleman)
