Last week, Neil Young tore into Donald Trump when the mogul used "Rockin' in the Free World" when announcing his candidacy for presidency. Now, another American presidential hopeful is using the song for his campaign, but this time he has Young's personal approval.
The candidate in question is Bernie Sanders. He's a senator from Vermont who is vying to lead the the Democratic Party in the 2016 election, and he used "Rockin' in the Free World" at his rally in Denver on Saturday (June 20). Much like Trump, Sanders used the tune for his entrance music.
It's no surprise that Sanders has adopted the song. After Trump used it, Young released a statement saying, "Donald Trump was not authorized to use 'Rockin' in the Free World' in his presidential candidacy announcement. Neil Young, a Canadian citizen, is a supporter of Bernie Sanders for President of the United States of America."
Of course, there's a certain degree of irony about "Rockin' in the Free World" being used as a campaign song by anyone, given that it's a criticism of America and its Republican politics. That being said, its lyrics about poverty are far more appropriate for a democratic socialist like Sanders than a Republican business mogul like Trump.
Meanwhile, Young's new album The Monsanto Years is streaming now ahead of its release on June 29 through Reprise.
