Neil Young to Tour Oil-Damaged Gulf Coast

In addition to being one of Canada's greatest-ever songwriters, Neil Young is an environmental activist, whose achievements include starting his own electric car conversion company and writing the environmentally conscious rock opera Greendale (a 2003 album that was recently turned into a graphic novel). Now, Young has added dates to his Twisted Road tour, taking him to the oil-damaged Gulf Coast.

As Rolling Stone reports, Young will be playing at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, FL on September 23. In a message posted on his website, he wrote, "Other dates will be announced that are surrounding this show in Florida and on the Gulf Coast." He added, "I am looking forward to playing Florida and the Gulf Coast."

The dates August 23, October 23, November 21 and December 21 have been set aside on his official site, but these seem too far apart to be reserved for his Gulf Coast tour.

Young didn't indicate whether or not he had an environmental agenda in booking the tour. Still, as the BP oil spill gets ever worse, it's impossible not to read into the political implications of a Gulf Coast tour.
